Toni Duggan has retired from football, both club and international, after not renewing her contract with Everton during the summer.
The 33 year old began her career at Everton in 2007, spending 2 spells at the club between 2007-2013, and 2021-2024. She also played for Manchester City for 4 years, as well as Liga F sides Barcelona and Atlético Madrid for 2 years each.
Duggan made her senior international debut in 2012, aged just 21, contributing to England's 3-0 win over Croatia at Bescot Stadium. She was also a crucial part of England's 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, where the side secured a bronze medal. Duggan was also part of the squad that won the 2019 ‘SheBelieves Cup’. She made 79 appearances for the Lionesses, scoring a total of 22 goals for her country, appearing at 2 World Cups and 2 European Championships.
Her club career began at Everton, where she initially played for their academy, before joining the senior side in 2007, spending 7 years at the club. With the toffees, she won the FA Women’s League Cup in 2007-2008, scoring the game winning goal against Watford in extra time, along with defeating Arsenal in the 2010 FA Women’s Cup final.
After seven years at Everton, Duggan joined Manchester City in late 2013, going on to become the first female player to win the clubs ‘Goal of the Season’ award. She was also included as part of City’s first ever Champions League squad. She had an impressive spell at Manchester City, winning the FA Women’s League Cup twice, the Women’s FA Cup once, and the FA Women’s Super League once.
In July of 2017, Duggan joined prestigious Liga F side Barcelona. In the two seasons she spent with the Spanish side, she won the Copa de la Reina (Queen’s Cup), the Copa Catalunya twice, and became a Champions League Runner-Up in 2018/19, being defeated 4-1 by Lyon at the Groupama Arena in Budapest.
Shortly after, Duggan announced she would be taking a trip to the nation's capital, joining Atlético Madrid. She made a total of 55 appearances for the club, coming on as a substitute in the second half of the Supercopa de España Femenina (Spanish Women’s Super Cup) final in 2021, which the club won.
After 4 years in Spain, Duggan returned to WSL side Everton in 2021, however missed out on the 22/23 season after announcing she was pregnant with her first child. She returned to the club in October 2023, before officially announcing her retirement on September 18th 2024.
Duggan took to her Instagram page to announce her retirement, saying she is ‘immensely proud of the part [she] has played alongside [her teammates].
