This match marks the first international break of the 24/25 season and it is also the first time that Australian and Swiss senior teams will meet.
For Switzerland this game follows on from 5/6 wins in the European Championship qualifiers, where they finished top of their group. In their group, which included Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Hungary, they scored 14 goals, conceding only 2.
Australia are currently under management of interim manager Tom Sermani following Tony Gustavsson’s departure after the Paris 2024 Olympics. The last international games played by the Matilda’s was the Olympics. During this tournament they did not progress out of the group stages following defeats to Germany and USA with only one win, which came in the 11 goal thriller versus Zambia. This left them third, with 3 points and a GD of -3 after all three matches.
With players in both teams playing for clubs in the WSL, NWSL and other well known leagues there will be many well known players on the field for this game. For example, on the Swiss team there is captain Lia Wälti (Arsenal), Alisha Lehmann (Juventus) and Ana-Maria Crogorcevic (Seattle Reign). For the Matilda’s, players will include captain Steph Catley (Arsenal), Ellie Carpenter (Lyon) and Katrina Gorry (West Ham). However Australia do have some big names who will not feature in this game due to injuries; Sam Kerr (ACL) and Hayley Raso (Hamstring), but for Switzerland this squad marks the return for 18 year old, Iman Beney who tore her ACL only weeks before the WWC was due to start last July.
Switzerland will come into this match hoping to continue their positive form, while Australia will intend to turn the results around and get their first win under Sermani.
This match will take place on Friday 25th October at Stadion Letzigrund, Zürich and will kick off at 18:00 (BST). It will be available to watch on Paramount Plus Australia.
