A game that shocked fans last season, with West Ham coming out with a win, but this year, Arsenal were ready to turn it around, with new Head Coach Renée Slegers pushing for what became a 2-0 win for the Gunners.
West Ham took on Arsenal at Chigwell Construction Stadium in Dagenham in their 5th WSL game of the season. West Ham sat at 11th in the league before this game, with Arsenal in 6th, an extremely low position for the club.
The hosts put out a 4-1-3-2 formation for this game, with their goalkeeper Kinga Szemik between the posts. Anouk Denton, Li Mengwen, Shannon Cooke and Shelina Zadorsky were the back four, with Amber Tysiak in the middle. Captain Katrina Gorry, Oona Siren and Seraina Piubel were next, and Viviane Asseyi and Riko Ueki were up front.
Arsenal’s Interim Head Coach Renée Slegers made a few changes in her squad after Wednesday’s win in the Champions League against Vålerenga. Daphne Van Domselaar started in goal, with Emily Fox, Laia Codina, Steph Catley and Katie McCabe starting at the back. Midfield duo Lia Wälti and Kim Little celebrated their 100th and 350th appearances respectively for the club. Caitlin Foord, Frida Maanum and Mariona Caldentey took their place towards the front, with Alessia Russo as the main forward.
The visitors dominated throughout the game, despite still being 0-0 at half time. A great chance came in from Alessia Russo towards the end of the first half, but no one was there to put her cross in the back of the net. West Ham struggled to shoot, with only 2 shots on target throughout the whole game. The best chance came from Lia Wälti, taking a shot from outside the box, but it went straight into the hands of Kinga Szemik.
At 60 minutes, Arsenal made a quadruple change, having still not scored a goal. This brought Beth Mead, Rosa Kafaji, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Stina Blackstenius on to continue to push through the deadlock. Just 10 minutes later, West Ham’s Amber Tysiak brought Stina Blackstenius down in the penalty area, receiving a foul and a penalty to Arsenal, which was taken by Mariona Caldentey, who finally broke the deadlock at 71 minutes.
Both Beth Mead and Katrina Gorry had shots after this, both trying to shoot from the left but not being able to get it in the back of the net. Rosa Kafaji also missed a shot, but managed to double their score at 89 minutes, shooting into the top corner of the net from the centre, giving Arsenal their second goal.
West Ham received a corner in the final seconds, but nothing came of it, the full time whistle blowing shortly after.
Full Time: West Ham 0 - 2 Arsenal
