During the first international break of the season as the Lionesses trained in preparation for their friendlies against Germany and South Africa, it was revealed that Arsenal forward Alessia Russo had been voted the Lionesses’ player of the year by the fans.
This was revealed to Lioness fans through a wholesome video posted on the Lionesses social media accounts, in which members of Alessia Russo’s family surprised her with the award whilst at St. Georges park. As well as picking up the player of the year award, Russo was also the top goalscorer for the Lionesses in 2023-24.
The player of the year award is a fan voted award and with Alessia Russo picking up first place, it was also revealed that Chelsea duo Lauren James and Lucy Bronze were those who had received the most votes behind first place Russo.
In England’s successful quest to qualify for the next Euros, Alessia Russo played a key role featuring in all of the qualifying games and the forward found the back of the net in three of these games.
England’s player of the year Alessia Russo scored in England's first euro qualifier of the year which took place at Wembley against Sweden in early April. She then also scored when England faced France away from home and once again when the Lionesses faced Ireland in Norwich.
In this October international break, the Lionesses face Germany at Wembley and then they face South Africa in Coventry. It is almost certain that Russo will want to continue providing crucial moments when representing her country - and will seek to make an impact in these two games if given the opportunity to play.
