Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur - Match Report

October 13 2024 was an exciting day for the Women’s Super League, as Manchester United hosted Tottenham Hotspur.

Coming into the game, Manchester United had secured their third win of the season, and Phallon Tullis-Joyce kept her third clean sheet.

With an impressive 0 goals conceded, a plus 7 goal difference, a game in hand and a third place in the table so far, United put on a show.

It was a slow but reassuring start for Manchester United. Tottenham Hotspur's Martha Thomas had the first shot on target, but her effort was blocked by Phallon. Manchester United were then able to travel the ball in the opposite direction, allowing Grace Clinton to take a strike from the right. Becky Spencer was able to clear the ball away, keeping the game level at nil-nil.

The first goal came in the 44th minute with Elisabeth Terland scoring a whopping right foot banger, and the assist coming from ex Tottenham player, Celin Bizet Ildhusøy. Then just 5 minutes later at 45+4', another goal came United's way, giving Terland an early brace. A cross was made across the box by Celin, with Terland pounding forward to head the ball straight into the net. Spencer had no chance stopping the ball and that made it 2-0 to United.

Half-Time: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

The second-half commenced with United almost making it three-nil. Five minutes into the game, Terland almost bagged herself a hattrick. Unfortunately. the strike that came from a Clinton cross was turned away by Spencer and hit the post.

Not long after, a third goal was scored, by Captain Maya Le Tissier. It was scored from the spot after referee Lisa Benn was obliged to give United a free-kick after a cross from Ella Toone hit the arm of Tottenham's Ashleigh Neville. Le Tissiers' strike from 12 yards went straight past Spencer who dove the right with the ball flying to the left. That made it 3-0 to United in the 59th minute.

In the 76th minute, United made a round of substitutions, with Rachel Williams coming on for Elisabeth Terland. Unfortunately, Williams couldn’t bag a goal after a strike that could’ve made it United's fourth was stopped by Spencer.

Later on Grace Clinton went down after a clash with Molly Bartrip in the box. Fans were appealing for a penalty but Clinton still got on the end of the ball and had a shot. Again, Spencer stopped the shot from passing over the line.

When the clock was reaching 90 minutes, the fourth official announced 8 minutes extra time. Unfortunately, the extra time didn’t work out for either teams with the game finishing 3-0 to United.

Ella Toone made history, as she was the first player to play 93 consecutive games as an outfield player. She has overtook former record holder, Kerys Harrop who plays for Birmingham City.
