Arsenal vs Everton - Match Report

In Arsenal’s game against Everton this weekend, neither team managed to get the ball in the back of their respective nets, but it was a game full of chances for both teams.

The hosts took to the stage at the Emirates for this game, with former Aston Villa goalkeeper Daphne Van Domselaar starting in goal. Emily Fox, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Laia Codina and Katie McCabe started as the back four in the 4-2-3-1 formation that Jonas Eidevall set out, with captain Kim Little and Kyra Cooney-Cross in the middle, along with Beth Mead, Frida Maanum and Mariona Caldentey covering up front. Alessia Russo started at the front, playing the number 9 role.

Everton came fresh off a 1-1 draw against Championship team Newcastle United Women in the formerly known Continental Cup. Courtney Brosnan was the team’s goalkeeper for the game, the team opting for a 4-3-4 formation. Elise Stenevik, captain Megan Finnigan and Justine Vanhaevermaet took up the defence position, Sara Holmgaard, Clare Wheeler, Honoka Hayashi and Lucy Hope were in midfield, and Karoline Olesen, Katja Snoejis and Veatriki Sarri were the forwards.

Arsenal dominated possession throughout the game, but it still wasn't enough to get past the defence of the visitors. Courtney Brosnan put in an excellent shift, saving many chances from some of Arsenal’s best goal scorers.

With just 2 shots on target, Everton were the weaker side, but the defence of the team had stepped up massively, getting the team their first point of the WSL this season.

Despite having 21 shots in the game, with Everton only having 5, 10 of Arsenal’s shots were off target, while 6 were blocked and 5 were on target. Before this game, Arsenal had won all home games against Everton that they'd ever played in the WSL, but this stat was cut short with the 0-0 result which came from the game.

Arsenal are currently sitting at sixth in the WSL league table, while Everton are now bottom of the table after this week’s fixtures.

The game at the weekend saw a return for Arsenal’s vice captain Leah Williamson, who had missed all WSL games so far this season due to concussion protocol. Leah was understandably happy to be back, the centre back’s interview after the game proved this.

Arsenal started off well with a shot from Emily Fox early on, but unfortunately it hit the crossbar, denying the American international of her first goal for the club. After a poor save from Brosnan, almost costing a goal from Mariona Caldentey, the goalkeeper stepped up, and the defence of the visitors put the hosts in their place.

The attendance for the game sat at 25,480, the highest attendance of the week across the board, with the highest attendance in a Championship game being the derby between Newcastle and Durham, with an attendance total of 3,586.
