Chelsea v Aston Villa Preview

Updated: Oct 8

And just like that the WSL is back! Tonight, Chelsea take on Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow, kicking off at 7pm (BST) on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two.

Chelsea have been the Women's Super League champions for 5 consecutive seasons, however Emma Hayes left the club to join the United States Women's National Team, with Sonia Bompastor taking on the position.

The WSL champions also progressed to the Semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where they were defeated 2-1 (aggregate) by current winners Barcelona.

The teams have faced off ten times, with Chelsea winning all ten games, winning 3-0 and 6-0 during the 2023/24 season.

Chelsea placed first in the 2023/24 Women’s Super League, netting 71 goals, with top scorer being Lioness Lauren James, who scored a total of 13 goals.

Aston Villa placed 7th in the WSL, scoring just 27 goals, with 8 coming from Rachel Daly.

The sides will face off twice in the Women’s Super League, with the first game taking place on September 20th to open the 2024/25 WSL season, and the second falling on February 2nd 2025.

Tonight's game will take place at Kingsmeadow, the Blues home ground, in the South West of London.

The second fixture in February will take place at Villa Park in Aston, kicking off at 2pm (GMT).

Chelsea are still without Sam Kerr, Mia Fishel and Aniek Nouwen, as well as Sophie Ingle who recently suffered an ACL injury, as well as captain Niamh Charles who picked up a shoulder injury against Feyenoord.

Aston Villa lose Jill Baijings who suffered a back injury over the summer, and Georgia Mullet.
