Matildas are left searching for a new Head Coach after an early Olympics exit.

Tony Gustavsson will no longer be taking on the role of Head Coach for the Australian women’s football team.

The announcement came at the end of a 1-2 defeat against the USA in the final group stage of the 2024 Olympics.

Australia were then counting on Columbia to ensure Canada either drew or lost, but hope did not avail.

Football Australia then announced that they would not be extending Gustavsson’s contract, which was due to expire in September.

A dismal display throughout the tournament led to the questioning of Gustavsson’s tactical and analytical analysis of opposing teams, which unfortunately led to doubt from the population that the Tillies would go far.

“It has been a great honour and privilege to have been able to be the head coach of the Matildas over the past four years.

“This journey with the team has had many incredible moments and memories that I will forever treasure,” Gustavsson said.

The coach has been an integral part of the team over the past four years, with a fourth place finish in both the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted on home soil.

Football Australia have been quick to start the recruitment process, releasing the following statement:

“As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we will conduct a thorough review of the campaign as we do with all our national teams following the conclusion of tournaments and each cycle.

“This review will identify areas for improvement and ensure we are well-prepared for future challenges.

“The process for the recruitment of the Matildas head coach will also commence immediately.”
