Liverpool vs Manchester United: Amber Whiteley Previews Friday Night Showdown at Anfield

Liverpool Women are preparing for a massive clash against Manchester United at Anfield on Friday night, with interim manager Amber Whiteley sharing her thoughts ahead of the fixture.

Team News:

There’s positive news on the injury front for the Reds, as Whiteley confirmed that both Leanne Kiernan and Niamh Fahey have returned to training. “Leanne Kiernan has been back in full training, and Niamh Fahey has been back in training too,” she said. However, Liverpool will still be without Hannah Silcock for this match.

Momentum from Arsenal Victory:

Liverpool head into the match buoyed by their FA Cup quarter-final victory over Arsenal last weekend. Reflecting on that performance, Whiteley emphasised the team’s defensive discipline and tactical execution. “I think we were better without the ball against Arsenal, which was a big part of our game plan,” she explained. “We wanted to control the central areas of the pitch, and I thought we did that really well.” She credited the team’s preparation and relentless work ethic, adding that the players are constantly refining their approach.

Facing an In-Form Manchester United:

Manchester United come into this fixture in strong form, having gone unbeaten in their last seven matches. Whiteley acknowledged their recent performances, noting, “I think they’ve gone under the radar a little bit this season. They’ve been performing really well, not conceding a lot of goals, and they’re really direct and quick in attack.” Despite the challenge ahead, she made it clear that Liverpool are ready. “It will be a tough test for us tomorrow night, but one that we are ready for.”

Exploiting United’s Style of Play:

When asked how Liverpool plan to approach the game, Whiteley highlighted potential opportunities to exploit United’s aggressive style. “They are very aggressive off the ball,” she noted. “When you’re that aggressive off the ball, you leave spaces. We have to be calm, we have to recognise where the spaces are, particularly on transition.”

Taylor Hinds Abuse Incident:

Whiteley also addressed the abuse directed at Taylor Hinds during Sunday’s match, calling it “completely unacceptable.” She praised Hinds for speaking out, emphasising the broader significance of her actions. “We’re proud of Taylor for making a stand. It’s important for her, but also for everyone else in the game too - for every little girl out there who dreams of being a professional footballer.” She reassured fans that Hinds is in a good place and fully focused on the upcoming match.

Anfield Under the Lights:

Playing at Anfield is always a special occasion, and Whiteley is looking forward to the opportunity. “Friday night under the lights at Anfield against one of our biggest rivals - those are the games everyone wants to be a part of,” she said. “We have prepared well this week and we are looking forward to the game.”

Kick-off is set for 7:15 PM on Friday, March 14, at Anfield. Tickets are still available at liverpoolfc.com.
