After a 10th home defeat for the Robins, Bristol City’s run in the Women’s Super League has come to an end.
Bristol City required a win against top-of-the-table competitors, Manchester City, if they wanted to keep their hopes alive of battling relegation.
It took City over an hour until they were able to score against Bristol, with Mary Fowler opening the floodgates for City, sending a thunderous strike into the back of the net. The game ended in a 4-0 victory.
After being promoted from the Championship at the end of the 2023/2024 season, City will make a swift return after remaining at the bottom of the table with only 6 points. Throughout the season, Bristol City managed to claim one win, 3 draws and 16 losses. This puts them 8 points behind their closest table opponent, West Ham United, who sit on 14 points.
Bristol City manager Lauren Smith spoke to Sky Sports regarding Bristol’s season in the Women’s Super League.
She said: “I think we have been sat at the bottom of the table for the season. It has always been a mountain to climb. Some of the performance we have been very proud of but we haven't got the results. We haven't shown up for 90 minutes week in, week out and that's shown at the end of the season.”
When asked about the future of Bristol City Women, Smith said: “We have to start looking at what next year looks like. We have to continue to build and make sure our fanbase is as incredible next year as it is now. We will be looking to continue this trend and build the excitement.”
Despite the Robins relegation, Bristol City’s home games will continue to be played at Ashton Gate. The club is committed to remaining at the stadium, after an average attendance of 7,000 supporters per game visited the stadium.
Bristol City Women still have two games remaining in their season in the Women’s Super League, as they travel to Kingsmeadow to play against Chelsea, and end their season back at Ashton Gate against Everton on May 18th.
