Tottenham Hotspur forward Bethany England has become the first player to score over 25 goals for two different teams within the Women’s Super League. This is a major achievement for Beth, overcoming all obstacles to be able to achieve her best, and impressing fans in the process, giving her a large amount of recognition for all her hard work.

Beth began her senior career at Doncaster Rover Bells before moving to WSL side  Sheffield Wednesday in 2011 on loan. She then moved to Chelsea in 2016, where after completing a loan spell at Liverpool in the 2017/18, returned to the current top WSL team after this, where she made 99 appearances and scored 45 goals before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2023. Beth scored 5 times within her first 19 appearances, while also including 7 starts for the club. Across all competitions, Beth scored a total of 74 goals for Chelsea, despite dealing with her Endometriosis, which Chelsea’s medical team were “extremely helpful” in supporting her with, but in 2023, she began to spend a lot of time on the bench, despite being praised previously by former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes for her work in giving Chelsea success. This was presumably due to Hayes selecting Australian striker Sam Kerr instead. During this time, she had also been dropped from Sarina Wiegman’s England squad, at first due to an ongoing hip injury, but unfortunately has not been called up since.

Beth was announced to be transferring to Tottenham Hotspur in June 2023 for a fee of £250,000. This was a vital move for Beth, as she felt she would be able to perform at the best of her ability again. Speaking about her time at Chelsea in the wake of her move, she said, “It was really difficult, a tough time in the sense that I was playing well, I was scoring. I know that we brought Sam Kerr in halfway through the season and I built up a great relationship with Sam, and then obviously it didn’t transpire to the next season. We didn’t play with a front two, [Emma Hayes] opted for a singular number nine which made my chances much more difficult based on who Sam is. She’s a prolific goalscorer so it was hard to fight my way back from that point. I probably overstayed a year and a half too long where I felt like I was just wasted there. It was a very difficult time, but I think I built up a lot of resilience from that and I’ve been able to take that to other scenarios in football.”

Beth’s move to Tottenham started off slowly, with a surgery on her hip keeping her out for a while, but now, she has become the face of the club, captaining the team and reaching 25 goals scored since then. Tottenham are currently sitting at 7th place in the WSL, after two previous losses to Manchester City and Arsenal meaning they are not in the running for the title. However, Beth is at her prime with Tottenham, and her presence within the club is making a massive difference to the squad. Her impact in the WSL is immense, and she is far from the end of her career, so fans will be excited to see Beth in action and scoring more goals for the WSL in the many years to come.
