Arsenal Secure Their Place in The Women’s FA Cup Quarter Finals

The 14-time FA Cup Champions won 2-0 against Championship side London City Lionesses
with goals from Laia Codina in the first half and Stina Blackstenius in the second half to
secure the North London side a ticket to the quarter finals of the competition.

10 teams separate the two sides within the domestic league tables with London City
Lionesses currently sitting 2nd in the Championship table with 25 points, just 1 point less
than top of the table Birmingham City and Arsenal currently sitting 3rd in the Super League
table on 27 points.
The game remained equal throughout the first quarter of the game, with London City Lionesses pursuing a high press against the Gunners.
Arsenal’s breakthrough came from their second corner, the 32nd minute saw a Laia Codina
header from the left side of the six-yard box to the bottom right corner, her 3rd goal for
Arsenal and her first in the FA cup.
The second half started with both Arsenal and London City Lionesses making substitutions.
Lia Wälti replaced Jenna Nighswonger for Arsenal and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah replaced
Isobel Goodwin for London City Lionesses.
Arsenal had more chances with Alessia Russo, Frida Maanum and Kyra Cooney-Cross having
goals saved by London City Lionesses Emily Orman.
More substitutions were made with London City Lionesses’ Maddi Wilde replacing Grace
Neville (55), Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius replacing Caitlin Foord (70), London City Lionesses’
Charlène Meyong replacing Kosovare Asllani.(77) and Arsenal’s Emily Fox replacing Katie
Reid (79).
Arsenal managed to finally get their second goal in the 81 st minute scored by forward Stina
Blackstenius. Her 50 th goal for the club pretty much secured Arsenals place in the quarter
finals of this competition.
London City Lionesses made two late substitutions to try and claw back a win in Shen
Mengyu replaced Julia Roddar and Lucy Fitzgerald replaced Megan Campbell in the 85th
minute but this did not change the scire and the game ended 2-0 to the home side.
This means that Arsenal have advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Women’s FA cup and
will see them draw one of these clubs: Manchester United, Chelsea, Sunderland,
Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, or Liverpool with the draw taking place Tuesday
night at 18:30 and the quarterfinals being played on the weekend of 8/9 March.
