Alexandra Popp's final international game for Germany ends in defeat after Australia pulled two goals over the Germans. In the 15th minute of Popps final match vs Australia, she left the pitch for the final time in a pre-planned substitution. With tears in her eyes, she applauded the crowd.
Popp's long-lasting international career started 14 years ago for Germany when she was only 19 years old. Over her career she has scored 67 goals, resulting in her winning ‘German Footballer of the Year’ twice in 2014 and 2016.
In a post match interview, Popp stated, “I'm often described, with my mentality on the pitch, that I drive the girls on, but also with a certain modesty.”
It is clear that Popp will be a incredibly missed player within the squad with her being the Germans captain for the last 5 years. She also thanked the fans, after full time she spent 45 minutes connecting to fans on the pitch and bidding a final farewell.
Even though this match finished in a 2-1 loss, this did not ruin the spirits of the day. The stadium (MSV arena) filled with 26262 supporters, showed gratitude for the players career and you could see the stadium full of shirts with Popp on the back. Germany are now in a place of transition and will be exciting to watch the development of other players taking the role of the veterans within the squad, with Marina Hegering and Merle Frohms also retiring.
Germany next play Switzerland and Italy in late November and early December, in preparation for the WEUROS in Switzerland next July.
