Writer: Amy KnaptonAmy Knapton

The current FA cup holders progress into the semi-final for the third year in a row after breezing past Championship side Sunderland.

From the get go it was clear which side was in the Women’s Super League due to a dominant performance from Marc Skinners side. The first goal came after seven minutes for the home side with Leah Galton heading them into the lead.

Despite failing behind quite early on the visitors remained determined and gained a few chances of their own. Brianna Westrup had a headed shot off target followed by a low driven shot from Keira Flannery caused by a corner which was poorly cleared by United

Manchester United we’re soon back on the front foot as captain Maya Le Tissier headed home Gabby George’s corner which doubled their lead in the stoppage time of the first half.

The second tier side came out full of confidence in the second half and had a few clear cute chances at goal with Rachel Williams shot deflected behind goal.

The two Sunderland substitutes combined to get themselves back into the game. Katy Watson looked to find Griffith in the box, whilst it looked like Le Tissier had seen the danger the clearance came back off Griffiths and flew past appalling Tullis-Joyce into the net.

It was a tense last 20 minutes across Leigh Sport Village, but Rachel Williams was making her presence felt as United pushed for that third goal.

United managed to get the third goal but not until added time, where Ella Toone headed Celin Bizet cross into the back of the net to seal United’s place into the semi-final of the cup. Toone who got player of the match has scored three goals in three matches in the FA cup this season.
