Tottenham Hotspur are set to take on WSL rivals Aston Villa in the League Cup, with Spurs returning to Brisbane Road for their first home game there in three weeks.
So far this competition...
Villa currently sit at the top of the table with a victory over Crystal Palace in the first group stage game. However, Spurs are not far behind in second place with their win over Charlton being tied on 3 points.
Both the hosts and visitors for this match were able to put two goals past their previous opposition in this competition, but with Tottenham conceding one they sit below Villa purely due to goal difference.
With this situation, this match sets up a close competition for who will sit top of the table heading into the international break.
Previous Meetings...
The two sides have met previously this season in the WSL in a close match between the sides.
Spurs originally took the lead through Summanen’s penalty 23 minutes in, before goals from Leon and Daly in the 78th and 88th minute respectively put Villa in the lead. But in the dying seconds of the game, the Lilywhites’ skipper, Bethany England, made sure her team secured a point with her goal at the 90+6th minute.
Last season, both teams were able to come out of one of their games facing one another victorious. In their clash in October of 2023, Spurs took the three points in a 4-2 win courtesy of aMartha Thomas hat trick and an Ash Neville goal.
In the reverse fixture, Leon opened the scoring, putting the Villains ahead, before Amy James-Turner equalised in the 38thminute. However, 15 minutes after the break Jordan Nobbs netted one for Aston Villa to take all three points.
Predictions
With just one point separating the sides in the league and goal difference in this competition’s table, it will no doubt be a competitive game between the two sides.
Whilst Aston Villa will be confident after having just grabbed their first league win of the season, Spurs will be hungry to bounce back to winning ways and this game could be the perfect opportunity.
