Newly Promoted Crystal Palace Take On Reigning WSL Champions Chelsea: Match Preview

Updated: Oct 8

Tonight marks Crystal Palace’s first ever home game in the Women’s Super League. The newcomers face Chelsea, the current WSL Champions, at Selhurst Park for a 19:30 kick off.

Chelsea have been crowned champions of the league for five consecutive seasons, with last season marking Emma Hayes’ final season at the club before departing for the USWNT. Sonia Bompastor has now taken over the Blues.

Crystal Palace take on their first ever season in the Women’s Super League for the 24/25 campaign, after winning the Championship last season.

In their first game of the season, Chelsea took on Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow. The hosts took a narrow 1-0 victory, with Villa almost grabbing a last-minute equaliser. Instead, the West London side took all three points in this match.

Palace faced Spurs away at Brisbane Road for their season opener. The Lilywhites took the victory in this game with a 4-0 win. However, Yanez pulled of a range of spectacular saves which denied the hosts from winning by a bigger margin multiple times.

The two sides previous meeting occurred just last season where they faced one another in then FA Cup. In this clash, Chelsea were the ones to advance into the next round. Palace showed a strong performance in this match but Chelsea just about came out on top with a 1-0 victory.

In comparison to last week, the Eagles will be without Brooke Aspin in this match as she will be serving her one-match ban after receiving 2 yellow cards in quick succession on Sunday, causing her to be sent off.

Tonight will no doubt be a difficult game for the newcomers as they face arguably the most difficult opponents in the league but with many positives to take from last week’s performance, anything is possible in this game.
