Newcastle United vs Portsmouth - Match Preview

This weekend will see Newcastle United Women take on Portsmouth Women at Kingston Park, following a 2-0 win for Newcastle in the reverse fixture. Both teams previously competed in the FA Women's National League Cup on February 25, 2024, when they were battling for promotion to the Championship. That match, held at St James’ Park in Newcastle, attracted over 22,000 fans, with some travelling up from Portsmouth to be part of the occasion.

In that game, Newcastle scored a late winner to secure a place in the final, where they eventually finished as runners-up after a 2-1 loss to Hashtag United a month later.

Since then, both teams have been promoted to the Championship, and after Newcastle’s 2-0 victory last time out, Portsmouth will be aiming for redemption in Sunday’s game.

Portsmouth currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table, having lost all but two of their league matches so far. The exceptions were two draws: 2-2 against Sunderland and 1-1 against Sheffield United.

Newcastle, in contrast, are in 7th place despite being a game behind most teams. They’ve had mixed results this season but bolstered their squad during the transfer window, signing Chelsea’s Charlotte Wardlaw and Aston Villa’s Freya Gregory on permanent deals, as well as bringing in Manchester City’s Poppy Pritchard on loan for the remainder of the season. The team is in a strong position heading into the weekend.

The game will take place this Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Kingston Park and will be available to watch on the Newcastle United official app.
