Germany and Spain compete for Bronze

The Olympic Women's Football bronze medal match will take place on Friday August 9th at 2pm (BST) and can be seen on Eurosport in the UK. The game will take place in the Groupama Stadium, home of Olympique Lyonnais.

The two sides have gone head to head 4 times previously, with the most recent match occurring in the 2022 Euros group stage, where Germany won 2-0. The Spaniards have never beaten the Germans, losing twice and drawing twice.

Spain were defeated 4-2 by Brazil in their semi final, with an own goal coming from a slip up from Cata Coll, deflecting off Irene Paredes into the goal. It was Spain's 2nd loss out of the 13 games they’ve played so far this year.

Germany on the other hand lost 1-0 to the United States in their semi final, with an extra time screamer from Sophia Smith. The Germans were without captain Alexandra Popp and striker Lea Schüller, and will both return to the squad, however Sydney Lohmann withdraws with illness.

Spain are looking to win their second set of medals for the year, after winning the UEFA Women's Nations League in February, defeating France 2-0, with goals coming from Aitana Bonmatí and new Arsenal signing Mariona Caldentey.

Germany have stuck with a 4-4-2 lineup the whole competition, changing the starting XI a few times, but no major changes other than Popp withdrawing due to illness. Spain have used a 4-1-2-3 throughout the campaign, also making a few changes to their starting XI.
