With the conclusion of the international break, the Women’s Super League returns for gameweek fifteen. On Sunday at 3pm, Brighton and Hove Albion host Chelsea at Broadfield stadium.
Ahead of this gameweek, home side Brighton and Hove Albion sit fifth in the league with 18 points from their games played so far. Chelsea are comfortably at the top of the league with 40 points and have lost no games as it stands.
Before the international break, Brighton and Hove Albion faced West Ham away from home and fell to a 3-1 defeat. Chelsea’s most recent game saw them face Everton at Kingsmeadow where they won 2-1 in the closing minutes after Lauren James shared a moment of excellence in the 93rd minute of the game.
The two teams last faced off in the reverse fixture at Kingsmeadow in early December. This game ended in a 4-2 win for Chelsea with a brace from Nusken and Beever-Jones and Rytting Kaneryd also scoring for the home side. For Brighton, Jelena Cankovic formerly of Chelsea scored and Seike scored their second.
Fran Kirby is a huge talking point ahead of this game. The well established Lioness is set to face Chelsea, the team whom she departed in May 2024 after she spent 9 years at the West London club. Ahead of this game, Fran Kirby spoke to the media and stated
“I’m really excited, I have a strong connection to the club.”
Kirby also went on to explain how she has some really good friends who play in the Chelsea squad and described her time at Chelsea as some of the best moments in her career. Finally, Fran also praised her previous club's drive and determination and stated how she wants to put herself against the best.
Sonia Bompastor spoke to the media and confirmed that record signing Naomi Girma could be involved in this weekend's game. Naomi Girma signed for Chelsea in January however is yet to feature for Bompastor’s side.
